Untitled was originally conceived for the legendary joint Lithuanian and Cypriot Pavilion, titled oO, presented at the 55th Venice Biennale. As is often the case with Gintaras Didžiapetris’s work, very little information is shared. His artistic practice manifests through works that take on multiple forms, from neon to sculpture, from photography to drawing, from video to writing, while deliberately avoiding any stylistic signature. Their entry into the world comes without “instruction manuals” or interpretative keys that might constrain their potential, leaving open the relationship between the work and its viewer. Untitled consists of two seemingly abstract forms that, however, allude to something tangible: they may recall the bioluminescent unicellular organisms inhabiting the ocean depths and, as often occurs in the Lithuanian artist’s work, evoke hidden mechanics, functioning almost as a metaphor for the origin of the creative process, that moment when a spark emerges epiphanically from the darkness of our soul and mind. The inclusion of this work in Luci d’Artista underscores how the initiative is increasingly establishing itself as a “home” for art created with luminous sources, capable of welcoming important works that are likely to become part of history. In addition to the Lithuanian and Cypriot Pavilion, Gintaras Didžiapetris also took part in the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, within the main show, titled ILLUMInations.
