Bouncing the Ball enters the urban context as a poetic and conceptual device, capable of activating new readings of public space and shared time. The work represents the action of the bounce and the deformation of a ball at the instant of impact: a technical gesture becomes essential form, a luminous freezing of time. Realized with the support of Nitto ATP Finals, the top-level world tennis event hosted in Turin since 2021, the work takes its cue from the ball bounce that precedes a serve, a metaphor for awareness, fragility and unpredictability: the "suspended moment in which one gathers oneself, discerns, decides." The Luce transforms, evolving from an ellipse into a perfect circle, a universal form that recurs throughout the artist's practice. For Previdi, the circle is also a hole, a threshold, a principle of permeability and passage.
The combination of the simplicity of the circle and the complexity of the ellipse evokes the shift from the Renaissance to the Baroque, and from a form based on a single center to one with two foci. Today, positioned in Piazza d'Armi, Bouncing the Ball is mirrored in the pool of water facing Piazzale Grande Torino. It becomes part of the city's history and urban fabric, in dialogue with its cultural and sporting life.
Riccardo Previdi explores the intersections of art, architecture, and design, centering his practice on the project-based dimension as a fluid, connective space between disciplines. His work investigates how these fields overlap, giving shape to collaborative and site-specific experiences. Previdi’s research has been widely exhibited in prestigious international institutions, including Kunst Raum Riehen (2023), Museion (2023), Villa Croce (2017), Marta Herford (2011), and Manifesta 7.
